Why and What COROYAWA is for

Japan is a super-aged society. One of the most serious issues are fractures from falling. Even going short distances, falling can cause broken bones.

Fractures makes walking difficult. And then leads to bedridden.

Fractures from falling breaks not only the personal Well-Being but also the family’s and society’s.

So we started thinking.

Can we make a floor which doesn’t break our bones when we fall?

We have created a floor Innovation.

Magic Shields Floor COROYAWA -fall fractures free-

CORAYAWA, anti fall fractures product, has achieved an impossible characteristic with its unique structure.

Combining hardness for easy walking and softness prevent fall fractures only when falling.

Mechanical metamaterial technology was the answer.

It becomes soft when it detects a sudden load & weight.

However, it retains its firmness on a regular basis therefore you can walk or use your cane and wheelchair normally.

Our Current Customers and Achievements

COROYAWA has won some of the most prestigious product awards in Japan and has received attention.

More than 400 hospitals and welfare facilities have installed our product COROYAWA in Japan.

Zero femur fractures and zero fatalities have been reported on COROYAWA. (as of August 2022)

In addition, we are conducting joint-research with various hospitals and academic institutions.

Future Plans

In the future, we plan to attach IoT sensors to COROYAWA.

We use the data to further understand falls and fall fractures for the benefit of the world.

We will also expand our business beyond medical industry by “Mechanical metamaterials” and “IoT”.

About Us

Magic Shields, founded in 2019, is a startup that researches and develops new materials and structures “mechanical metamaterials” based on automotive engineering and medicine. To reduce the increasing number of fractures caused by falls worldwide, Magic Shields has developed COROYAWA, an innovative floor material to combine the two properties of “walking stability” and “shock absorption,” which were previously considered difficult to combine.

We Magic Shields aim to break the vicious cycle by realizing a society in which all people can move freely at their own l without worrying about fractures. Also our mission is to reduce the number of people worldwide who become “bedridden” due to fractures.

Frequenty Asked Questions

When you find obvious dent on the surface that may make walkability low, it needs to be replaced. Another physical sign may be softness on COROYAWA block portion. It also impacts walkability so may be the timing of replacement.
Yes. However, the shock-absorbing capability is smaller than "mechanical block" in the center. In addition, the outside of the slopes is thinner to eliminate steps, but the shock-absorbing capacity of that part is smaller than that of the thicker part.
The heavy object with narrow contact area may cause dentes. The load capacity is 2kg/sqr cm. When placing furniture, chairs, etc., the bottom area of each leg must be at least 9 sqr cm. For example, a chair with four legs having a minimum base area of 36 sqr cm can hold up to 72kg. The weight of items to be loaded includes the weight of furniture, chairs, etc. Also, if you place a "delivery truck" or "portable x-ray machine" on the "assembled type," it may dent or stretch the surface cover.
The practical service life of the product for use in hospital rooms and living rooms of medical and welfare facilities is approximately 10 years, although it may vary depending on the environment and conditions of use. Even if the surface cover deteriorates over time (minor scratches, stains, or discoloration) due to long-term use, if there are no dents, cracks, or other changes in the mechanical block, the shock absorption capacity will not be affected.
Please use neutral detergent or ethanol for cleaning. When you rinse with water, be sure drying out to avoid slippery.
COROYAWA is hard to the touch and maintains high walking stability. The shock-absorbing capacity of COROYAWA has been tested by the Nagoya University Graduate School of Engineering, and it has been proven that it can soften the impact of a fall to about half that of wood flooring. The impact of a fall on "COROYAWA" is less than the load of a femur fracture (221kgf) reported in medical literature.
Yes, they are included. For the "assembled type," ramps can be installed on all three sides except for the side that touches the bed.
We have confirmed the performance against head impact using the Head Injury Criteria (HIC). We found that the risk of head injury was reduced to about 1/10 compared to flooring.
Yes, they can be used together. When using with a portable toilet or handrail, please make sure that your feet do not touch the slope.
Yes, they can be used together. The mobile lift can be used on the "Assembled Type" without any problems. When transferring, make sure that all casters of the lift are firmly positioned on the "Assembled Type" flat surface.
There is no problem even if a medical bed passes over the product. If a medical bed rides on "Koroyawa Pro20" for a long time, the mechanical block under the caster or the surface cover may be dented. *Please use a load distributing plate (sold separately) when installing under the bed.
The contact area is narrow and may be dented if a heavy object is placed on it. The load capacity is 2kg/sq cm. When placing furniture, chairs, etc., the bottom area of each leg must be at least 9 sq cm. For example, a chair with four legs having a minimum base area of 36 sq cm can hold up to 72kg. The weight of items to be loaded includes the weight of furniture, chairs, etc. Also, if you place a "delivery truck" or "portable x-ray machine" on the "assembled type," it may dent or stretch the surface cover.
At this time, it is not recommended to use the product in the bathroom.

FOUNDER & CEO, Master of Science in Robotics / MBA

In 14 years of engineering career at Yamaha Motor, he had designed and developed motorcycles and also led new business development. One of the products he led was motorcycles for "SUPERCROSS".

His personal experience of losing his grandmother from injuries and friends in the wake of disasters and terrorism increases his ambition to reduce injuries from the world. He started inventing "protecting people" products and founded Magic Shields, Inc. in November 2019 to eliminate injuries from the world.

We are very pleased to have invested in Magic Shields and support their challenge to reduce the risk of fall fractures and extend healthy life expectancy.
I can see a future in which people's activities are limited in order to avoid fall fractures, and those who watch over them are constantly under pressure to keep their eyes on them, but with Magic Shields, people can enjoy a safer and more secure life without falling seriously.
We will do our utmost to help maximize the value of the customer experience by drawing on our experience in managing retail and service businesses.

It has been about a year since we installed COROYAWA in the room of a patient who uses a wheelchair (with hemiplegia) and falls frequently (about once every 1 to 2 months). So far there have been no broken bones. We feel very relieved.

Staff of Nursing Home

During night shifts and other times when there are few staff, it was difficult to visit the residents when the bed release sensor sounded, so there was always a concern of them falling and breaking a bone. But with the COROYAWA I don't have to worry if I can't get there right away.
